Industry Importance:

West Bengal is focussing on IT, ITeS, ICT (Information & Communication Technology), and ESDM (Electronic System Design and Manufacturing) sectors. West Bengal has a presence in the manufacture of solar equipment and electronics-related power & railway sectors. The electronics & IT hardware sector in West Bengal has great potential for growth with the availability of skilled and qualified manpower. A large part of the existing manpower in the semiconductor industry in India is from West Bengal. WEBEL is the nodal agency of the Government of West Bengal for developing the Electronics & IT industry of the State. Webel is also driving a series of concentrated efforts to structurally address the talent concerns of the Electronics & IT/ITES industry.
The region has prospects for Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS). EMS is a sector that provides contract design, production, and after-sales support to OEMs maintaining quality & standard in electronics assembly. This is a critical phase in many types of electronic devices specially used for defence industry. PCB assembly & wiring harness plays a vital role in connecting all electronic and electrical components for sensor signals, power supply, and transmitting data. IPC Standard on Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies & Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies ensures electronic & Wire Harness assemblies meet acceptance requirements for the electronics industry. It is important for companies to adhere to “Standards” in the manufacturing process to meet reliability & enhancing the quality of products for defence & industrial applications.
